EMBROIDERED DÉCOUPAGE:
1 Place one layer of Cutaway Magic stabiliser in the embroidery frame. If the stitches in the design are overly dense or long it may be necessary to use two layers. This will ensure accurate registration of the embroidery design.
Cutting with stencil burner
2 layers for cutaway
Note: Use Rayon thread only for this technique. Polyester or acrylic thread will burn and/or melt with heat. If you are not sure what type of thread you are using, do a test before beginning your project.
5 Use glass-headed pins to pin your embroidery motif to your garment in any position and then use Invisa Sheer thread to freehand stitch around the outside edge of your design to attach it to your garment. You may also choose to appliqué around the edge of your design using a tiny zigzag stitch and an open-toe foot.
Using Jenny’s Embroidered Découpage technique opens up a whole lot of new creative opportunities when it comes to embroidery, in fact Jenny’s Heritage quilt and book use this technique to make a quilt – imagine being able to make an embroidered quilt without actually embroidering directly on to the quilt fabric! This technique is really exciting, so look around your home and sewing studio to find those garments, home decorating items and that fabric that you have just been too afraid to embroider; now is the time for fear-free embroidery. Give new life to that tired old lampshade, basket, table, mirror or vase around the home or that jacket, jeans, hat, shoes, or handbag in your wardrobe. You can even make jewellery!
Having used appliqué scissors in the past to cut away excess fabrics and threads around embroidered appliqué motifs, I know you just love this technique as much as I do. I would love to see what you do with this technique so please email me a photo of your latest creation using this technique or with any questions: debbie@rnkdistributing.com
Sew fearlessly,
2 Stitch the design directly onto the Cutaway Magic stabiliser, leaving the embroidery hooped when it is completed.
3 Use a heat resistant surface such as a ceramic tile or a glass cutting board to work over.
4 Place the hoop on the work surface in a well ventilated area. Use the Magic Heat-Cutting tool as you would a pen by using the chosen tip to ‘trace’ around the edge of the embroidery design close to the edge of the stitching. If you are using several layers of stabiliser then trace around the design a little slower to allow the tool to burn through the layers of fabric and stabiliser.
