− use Tearaway Magic at the back of the stitching as a stabiliser as it tears away easily (especially if dampened) being removed without the fear of distorting the stitching, is eco friendly washing when first the cloth is washed
− mark stitch lines for all rows of decorative stitches to be used as guides to centre the stitch row or foot over
− use an open-toe foot (so you can see the needle and stitching easily) − keep the machine foot centred over the marked lines and your eye on the needle
− today’s state-of-the-art sewing/embroidery machines sew perfectly formed stitches if you use the correct thread, bobbins, needles and backing stabiliser (such as Tear-away Magic which can be removed easily without distorting the stitching)
Enid is the queen of ‘stitch stacking/ building’ using rows of decorative stitches from her sewing machine to create magnificent borders.
These three tablecloths are the ultimate in creative stitch stacking/ building combined with matching tonal embroideries. Stitch stacking/building is combined rows of decorative stitches that are parallel and aligned with each other and appear as a braid or lace.
We asked Enid to give us her best tips to ensure perfect stitch stacking/building:
− stabilise your fabric with several coats of heavy duty spray starch, ironing between coats
− allow your fabric to feed through the machine unhindered. If you retard or pull the fabric under the foot of the machine it will distort the stitching so it is very important to have a clear space around the machine to ensure free fabric feeding at all times.
