14 Using the open-toe foot or couching foot, fine pre-wound bobbin, tear-away stabiliser at the back of the fabric and 90/14 sewing needle, sew on both marked lines:
− couch the Pink No 8 pearl cotton thread centred over both lines using a narrow zigzag, Pink thread and a couching foot
− a decorative lace stitch on each side of the of the pearl thread using silver thread and an open-toe foot
− a decorative cross stitch using two strands of Cachet thread through
the needle on the outside edge only of the lace stitch and an open-toe foot.
15 Cut the buttonholes and then use a bodkin to thread an 18in length of pink ribbon through the buttonholes, making sure the ends of the ribbon extend beyond the border strip.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
16 Cut quilt sections to piecing size keeping the designs centred:
− one, 24in quilt square to 22 /2in (360mm
1
x 350mm hoop embroidery only)
For all other hoop sizes:
− one centre 16in block to 141/2in square − four border strips to 43/4in x 141/2in
− four cornerstones to 43/4in square
17 Use construction thread in the 80/12 sewing needle and bobbin and the 1/4in patchwork foot to construct the quilt:
− attach the side embroidered borders to each side of the 141/2in centre block
− attach a 43/4in cornerstone to each end of the top and bottom buttonhole borders
− attach the top and bottom borders to the quilt, catching the ends of the ribbons in the seams.
FINISHING DECORATIVE STITCHING 18 Cut four, 24in lengths of silver ‘rattail’ cord and then use the couching foot to couch these lengths over the seams using silver thread, an open-toe foot and a narrow zigzag stitch using the photo as a guide. Also mark matching seamlines on the 221/2in embroidered square and couch the silver ‘rattail’ over these lines.
19 On the side borders only, sew a decorative lace edge stitch on the outside edge of the couched silver ‘rattail’ thread using Cachet thread.
QUILTING 20 Fuse the Quilt Magic lightweight fusible batting to the back of the quilt and then centre 24in square of backing silk at the back of the batting (use basting spray or pins to hold it in place).
21 Use the freehand foot with matching thread to the fabric in the needle and bobbin and quilt in and around the embroidery or have it quilted professionally.
22 Use the 21/2in fabric strips, cut and joined on the bias to measure 100in, to bind the quilt in your preferred way. Use a hand sewing needle and thread to stitch the four diamanté buttons over the corner intersections of the couched ‘rattail’ cord and the oval button in the centre of the quilt.
