PREPARATION

Fabric preparation:

1 Use the rotary cutter, self-healing cutting mat and quilting ruler to cut from the tan silk dupioni:

Embroidery fabric:

− EITHER one 16in square for the middle of the wall hanging (if not using the 360mm x 350mm hoop) OR one 24in square for the middle of the wall hanging (if using the 360mm x 350mm hoop)

− four, 6in x 16in strips for quilt sides

− four 6in cornerstones

NOTE: Use the spray starch to stabilise the embroidery fabric using several coats, ironing between coats. Also, use the fabric marking pen and quilting ruler to mark vertical and horizontal lines that intersect through the centre of each piece of cut fabric for embroidery.

Backing and binding fabric:

− one, 24in square for quilt backing

− 21/2in strips cut and joined on the bias to measure 100in for binding

Embroidery preparation: 2 All embroidery uses sticky-back stabiliser, tear-away stabiliser, an 80/12 embroidery needle, the embroidery foot, and embroidery bobbin thread. Michelle has helpful information on her website to achieve the best results for hooping. (If using a 360mm x 350mm hoop, your stabiliser and fabric should be hooped and clipped into place.)

3 There are colour charts in the PDF file on Michelle’s Designs A Garden for Bella design CD so your can use these for thread colours and sequence.

4 After completing each embroidery, clip threads, remove stabiliser and pen marks, and then press the embroidery from the wrong side.

5 Use the design software to modify and centre the following designs in the specified hoop area (according to the sized hoop available for your embroidery machine) and then save the modified designs:

− select, Flowers & Leaves 110 design and delete the ribbon, stem, and leaves leaving only the flower and name the file Flower Only (needed for all embroidery options)

− select, Border 101 design and reduce the design proportionately to measure 61/2in long, name the file Smaller Border (needed for embroidery option No 1 to No 3)

− select, Smaller Border design and combine two to measure 131/2in

(side borders) name the file Smaller Borders (top and bottom borders) (needed for embroidery option No 1 and No 2)

− select, Buttonhole 100 design to create a new design of seven buttonholes, 13/4in apart, name this file Buttonhole 100a (top and bottom borders) (needed for embroidery option No 1 and No 2)

− select and combine two, Flowers & Leaves 100 (one mirrored), two, Flowers & Leaves 108 (one mirrored) and one, Border 103 using diagram No 2 on the pattern sheet along with printed templates of the designs to help with the design combination and save as New Centre (needed for embroidery option No 2 only)

6 Transfer the following designs to your machine according to your available hoop sizes:

− 180mm x 130mm hoop: Flower Only,
Buttonhole 100, Flowers & Leaves 100
and 108, Smaller Border, Border 103
and Motif 103
− 360mm x 200mm hoop: Smaller Borders,
Buttonhole 100a
and New Centre

− 360mm x 350mm hoop: Block 101
