your placement then place the fabric over the Hoop Magic in the hoop, aligning the divide lines for the first embroidery design on the Template Magic with corresponding lines on the hoop. Remove the template, place the protective coating over the back of it, and embroider the design. Repeat for all embroidery.

9 Hoop the Hoop Magic and then place the 15in muslin square over the stabiliser, always using the basting/set/stay stitching to secure the fabric to the stabiliser in the hoop for all embroidery designs.

NOTE: When embroidering individual designs, each design is centred over a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line and connects to the design on each side of it so it appears as one large design. Always embroider designs opposite each other rather than in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.

10 Embroider the designs in the following sequence using the photo as a guide to embroidery positions and thread sequence:

Pillow No 1:

svg35, centred on the diagonal (in both directions) in the centre of the square

svg36, on each side of the centre on the vertical and horizontal lines

svg37, on each side of the centre on the diagonal lines in each corner

Pillow No 2:

svg03, centred in the square

svg04, on each side of the centre on the diagonal lines in each corner

svg05, on each side of the centre on the vertical and horizontal line

11 Clip all jump threads, remove the backing stabiliser and press the embroidery from the back over a towel.

CONSTRUCTION 12 Cut each 15in embroidered square to a 14in square, keeping the embroidery centred.

13 Refer to the pattern sheet for layout diagrams for the pillows, using them to construct the pillows.

14 Attach the 1in lime green borders to the edge of the 14in embroidered squares. Pillow No 1 has the borders pieced with cornerstones and embellished using Bright Lime green thread and a satin scallop stitch along the seam line.

Pillow No 2 has the borders joined using the ‘Amish’ technique.

Pillow No 2 Frill:

15 With right sides together, join the two plain lime green cotton 41/2in strips across the width of the fabric together into one length. Repeat with the two, 3in strips across the width of the yellow floral fabric. With right sides together, join these two strips along the length of the strips.

16 Join the ends of the strips to form a circle and then fold the fabric in half with the wrong sides together. The plain lime green fabric will now appear as a 1/2in piping along the edge of the floral fabric.

17 Gather the frill with two rows of stitching, 1/4in apart, to fit the pillow top and then attach the frill to the outside of the lime green borders on the cushion top by

stitching between the two rows of gathers. Attach right side of frill (floral fabric) to right side of pillow top and raw fabric edges aligned.

Pillow No 1 Flange

18 Attach the 3in floral border strips to the outside edge of the narrow lime green borders on the pillow top.

19 Make up and attach the pillow backing using the four muslin, 14in x 21in rectangles in your preferred way. Turn pillows to the right side, press and then stitch in the ditch though all fabric layers around the outside edge of the embroidered square.

20 Place the inserts in the pillows and then place them on a garden chair to bring a ‘touch of Bali’ to your outdoor room.

If you enjoyed making these
pillows, think how easy it
would be to make Sharman’s
Vintage Garden quilt,
especially if you have access
to a 360mm x 350mm
embroidery hoop.
