These butterfly necklaces are easy and entertaining to create and with the
‘recession wind’ blowing they are economical accessories and make great gifts.
The necklaces are made using Jenny’s Butterflies for Catherine design CD, (designs bfc26 and bfc23) stitched out with Jenny’s rayon 40 embroidery threads.
Hoop one layer of Dissolve Magic with
one layer of nylon organza to embroider
the butterflies. Embroider one of each
design using Pinky No 2 thread combined
with soft green fabric for the appliqué insert
and one of each design using Granny Smith
No 201 with soft
pink fabric for the
appliqué insert. Use
Jenny’s Embroidered
Découpage technique
(see page 65 for
details) to remove
the stabiliser and
organza from
the embroidery
and then use the
Magic Rhinestone
Setter to apply Jenny’s heat-fix crystals to all four butterflies.
Use Jenny’s Magic Tassel Maker to make a tassel and a twisted cord (following the detailed directions that come with the Magic Tassel Maker). Use 10 lengths of each thread colour (Pinky, Granny Smith and Wisteria
No 222) to make a twisted cord
(your desired length) and a matching tassel for the bottom of the necklace. Thread a 2in heavy cord through the loop at the top of the tassel for insertion.
You will need 12 ‘jug beads’ (6mm beads with a 3mm hole) for the two twisted cords. We used inexpensive plastic beads from Spotlight in Australia and Michaels in the US in colours that matched our butterfly embroideries.
Thread six ‘jug beads’ on each cord from the folded end. Slide three beads to each end of the cord and then tie a knot on each side of the beads to hold them in place, making sure there is 1in of free cord on each end of the twisted cord below the knot at the bottom of the beads.
Glue the matching butterflies together (pink on one side and green on the other), wrong sides together, making sure the butterflies are aligned around the edges of the embroidery. Use the photo as a guide to secure the 1in ends of the twisted cord on each side of the wings and the heavy cord at the top of the tassel below the butterfly.
You may choose to cut the twisted cord in the middle, securing the ends with knots so the necklace can be tied at the back of the neck at your desired length. Wear your necklace and enjoy the compliments or give it as a gift and watch the receiver’s eyes light up with delight!
